I\u2019m from Germany and have been living in Valencia, on Spain\u2019s Mediterranean coast, for over 20 years. I mainly work in marketing translation and transcreation from English, Spanish and Catalan into German. My clients are mostly airlines, fashion and cosmetics brands, food and wine companies, as well as museums, cultural institutions and tourism boards. One area I particularly enjoy is translating dramatised audio guides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, I have also worked on a growing number of non-fiction book translation and editing projects for different publishing houses: books on design and architecture, as well as cookbooks and some children\u2019s books. I find it absolutely fascinating to be involved in the whole process, from the first drafts to the final review of the page proofs just before going to print.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how did I get into translation? Well, it was not a straightforward decision at all; in fact, it was rather spontaneous. After school, I was torn between all sorts of options, from industrial design and medicine to something language-related. In the end, I decided to study translation, with English and French as my languages. But on my very first day at university, I found out that there was also an intensive preparatory semester for complete beginners in Spanish. So I changed my plans on the spot and thought: \u201cWhy not learn something completely new?\u201d That is how I ended up studying English and Spanish. Several internships at translation agencies in Spain eventually led me to move here shortly after graduating, and I went straight into self-employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really appreciate the freedom that comes with being a freelancer, and I think it suits my personality very well. No two working days are exactly the same, which is something I genuinely enjoy. I\u2019m not a big fan of strict routines, so rather than following a fixed schedule, I like being able to organise my work, leisure activities and social life around my projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That flexibility is especially important for creative projects that require a lot of thinking and brainstorming. On these days, I need even more breaks to clear my head and make room for fresh ideas. I might go out for a walk while listening to a podcast, meet a friend for coffee or use the time to do some exercise, which also helps to balance out the many hours spent sitting at my desk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m very grateful to be part of a large international community of translators from all over the world, through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmeetings.org\/\">MET<\/a> (Mediterranean Editors and Translators) association, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bpconf.com\/\">BP Translation Conferences<\/a> as well as different Facebook groups. These communities are wonderful for exchanging knowledge, staying in touch, building collaborations, finding moral support and making wonderful friends along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, I often attend events here in Valencia organised by the tourism sector, and I rely a great deal on my contacts with voice actors and people working in audiovisual production. This is incredibly helpful when I\u2019m working on audio guides and similar projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I\u2019m not working, first and foremost, I love being in nature, whether that\u2019s in the forest or by the sea, on the beach, in the water or on the water. I love canyoning, hiking, scuba diving and trying out new sports and activities. I also love travelling and discovering new countries and cultures, especially through their food culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding AI, I am quite concerned about the way many clients and companies are increasingly trying to involve it in translation processes without fully understanding the risks. In my own work, I try to inform and gently educate clients about the lack of nuance, the often inadequate quality, the absence of real cultural sensitivity and, above all, the fact that genuine creativity cannot simply be automated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What worries me most is that more and more companies seem willing to accept lower-quality language these days simply because it is faster or cheaper. I find that quite alarming, because poor translation can weaken a brand, damage trust and make a company sound careless or generic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, wherever I can, I try to advocate for the value of human translation. As translators, we bring judgement, creativity, cultural knowledge, tone of voice and a real sense of responsibility to the text. But more than 30 years ago, I travelled to Copenhagen as an exchange student and ended up exchanging the beautiful deserts of Arizona, Texas, and California with the gorgeous green countrysides of Denmark. And in 2021, I finally became a dual citizen.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I hold a BA in English literature from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/\">University of California<\/a>, and a BA in linguistics and an MA in English and translation studies from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ku.dk\/en\">University of Copenhagen<\/a>. After 10 years working as an in-house translator for two Danish agencies that have long since been bought up by giants in the industry, I went freelance in 2010, and in 2020, I fired my last translation agency client and transformed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloyd-ls.com\/\">Lloyd Language Services<\/a> (LLS) into a boutique agency specializing in creative translations, transcreation, and copywriting \u2013 leveraged by Human Intelligence.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I founded LLS because I felt it had to be possible to provide high quality translations and great service to clients and still treat freelancers with dignity. Fortunately, I found companies that agree with me, and gradually more and more clients started using us for other language combinations besides English. Now I always say \u201cwe\u201d when talking about my company, because even though I\u2019m a solo-entrepreneur, Lloyd Language Services would be nothing without our amazing freelancers.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>When the large language models, or LLMs, first came on the scene, we lost some clients, of course, and I did a lot of research and took some courses in an effort to keep up with the times and figure out a way to incorporate AI into the business without compromising our values. But I just can\u2019t accept the compromises on quality and creativity that come with AI, and I\u2019ve come to realize that there is a market for human-powered translations and non-AI language solutions. So now my focus is on getting the word out to the world about why it still makes sense to use human translators.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I live in a suburb of Copenhagen and share an office in the city with two other solo-entrepreneurs in a fantastic co-working space. I try to get into the office 3-4 times a week, but don\u2019t always succeed if I have meetings or courses or have to stay home with our dog, Clara, during the day, so we can leave her home alone in the evening instead. When I do go to the office, I take the train \u2013 to avoid traffic and parking problems, but also because walking back and forth to the stations is an easy way to get some exercise every day. And the train ride is a great chance to get some work done or just unwind with a good book or some knitting.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>At work, I spend about three quarters of my time on project management \u2013 negotiations with clients, managing multilingual projects, quality control, etc. But I also want to keep my translation, transcreation and copywriting skills sharp, so I make sure to have time every day to do my own projects in US English as well.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>From the very beginning, my company has been network-based. I source translators from my large network of talented linguists and I attend networking meetings and events as often as possible to build a brand and get the word out about what we (me and my amazing team of suppliers) can do. As a result, most of our clients have come to us via word of mouth. At the moment I\u2019m a member of four business networks, ranging from a network for women business owners to a \u201cknitworking\u201d group hosted by my trade union. I am also a member of several professional groups on Facebook and am active on and off on LinkedIn. The focus of my messaging in these fora is on helping people understand that AI has its uses, but when it comes to reaching their target audiences with authentic communication, nothing beats human translation and copywriting.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>My main professional translator network is an amazing group of Danish translators on Facebook. We used to meet up once a year or so, and some still do, I think, but most of our contact takes place online. It\u2019s a really important network though, and a continual source of useful professional input. I think it\u2019s vital that freelancers in the language industry form these kinds of safe communities where they can talk openly about their work, agencies, rate setting, and now, handling the impact of AI on our industry.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While the end goal of my networking efforts is to bring in new clients, I feel I also benefit personally from participating in these professional gatherings. Running a business all on you own can be quite lonely at times, and it\u2019s important to have good people with whom you can talk strategy and bounce ideas around.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Obviously, running an agency all on my own takes up a lot of my time. But when I do get a chance to take some time off, I enjoy binging British and American TV shows (solely to keep my language skills up, of course \ud83d\ude09), knitting, long walks and hikes with doggo and friends, gardening, travelling, and spending time with family, especially my oh-so-clever granddaughter.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mili and the team at <em>The Translator\u2019s Guide to the Industry<\/em> for reaching out and showing an interest in my work as a translator.
